Writers' Guidelines
Following are freelance writing guidelines for the Tucson Newcomers Guide, Tucson Guide, Tucson Home, and Valley Guide.
Content
Our publications are targeted to specific audiences. The best way for you to know if your story idea is appropriate is to read our magazines.
Clips
It is necessary for editors to review samples of your writing. Please send us clips of previously published work (photocopies are acceptable) with a cover letter. Include the name of the publication in which the work appeared, publishing company, and date of publication. Send clips to Editorial Department, Madden Media, 1650 E. Fort Lowell Rd., Ste. 100, Tucson, AZ 85719.
Queries
For feature stories, please send a specific story proposal--including the topic, an outline of the story's scope, the angle from which you will approach the subject, and proposed sources. You should also consider in your proposal how the story will complement the magazine's content. Be brief. Send your query to the attention of the editor of the magazine for which you are interested in writing, as noted in the publication masthead. Queries may be sent to Editorial Department, Madden Media, 1650 E. Fort Lowell Rd., Ste. 100, Tucson, AZ 85719.
Response Time
Due to the high volume of submissions and varied frequencies of publication, our response time can take as long as several months. Often we consider story ideas for several issues and may delay the publication of some stories for seasonal reasons.
Length
Feature stories usually range in length from 1,200 to 2,000 words. We sometimes run short features--around 500 or 600 words.
Deadlines
You will be given a deadline at the time we assign your story. You will usually have between four and six weeks to complete your work.
Payment
Madden Media pays the agreed-upon fee within 30 days of acceptance. Payment ranges in amount depending on the writer's experience, the type of work, and the publication in which the story is scheduled to appear.
