Madden Wins Marketing Award, Helps Local Nonprofit
A team of five Madden Media writers and designers recently competed in the Battle of the Ads and won the Bullseye Award for targeted marketing. This annual competition, sponsored by the Tucson chapter of the American Advertising Federation, judges the work of competing companies, each of which is tasked with creating a single marketing piece for a nonprofit over the course of 24 hours.
Madden Media was paired with 9 Queens, an educational organization "dedicated to extending the benefits of chess to those most in need of its benefits, especially girls and at-risk youth." Don Scheer, Emily Rush, Jamie Britton, Tabitha Nutting, and Jeff Atwell created a postcard promoting 9 Queens' annual Chess Fest event. A camera crew documented the project's brainstorming and production.
In addition to taking the prize for most targeted message, Don and team were excited to donate their time to create collateral that, according to 9 Queens Co-founder and Executive Director Jean Hoffman, "Does such a wonderful job of capturing not the just the spirit of Chess Fest, but the spirit of 9 Queens."
"We kept it fun by focusing on delivering a great product to our client, and any award would just be icing on the cake. I think we lucked out by receiving such a fun and passionate client, who encouraged us to push our concepts as far as we could. And most rewarding, we're happy that we were introduced to such a worthwhile nonprofit and intend to support them individually," said Don.

Making Madden Greener in 2010
As part of our ongoing efforts to use environmental resources responsibly, we're starting the year with a new paperless records system for our client service and ad traffic team. Documenting projects electronically will save an estimated 7,410 sheets of paper this year. Our accounting staff successfully implemented a similar system last year.We made several other changes in 2009, the biggest being our move into a new Downtown Tucson headquarters, which we first renovated to use energy-efficient sensor lighting and solar power at the maximum level allowed by our local power company. Our 102-year-old home may be the oldest solar-powered building in Arizona.
To reduce the impact of publications manufacturing, we've used recycled paper for all our proprietary magazines and soy-based inks for all titles for several years.
